OMG--this from someone who very, very, rarely writes a review. I read the first book in this series, "This Case Is Gonna Kill Me" in one rapid sitting and devoured the second as soon as I was done. At the end of TCIGM, Linnet (a brand new attorney/heroine who works for a vampire run law firm) succeeds in foiling and capturing a murderer as well as closing a 17 year lawsuit. She does it with intelligence and a peculiar talent for "lucky" accidents that save her as people all around her are killed. But, as the book ends, Linnet loses her Elven/changeling boyfriend to Fae and vows to save him. "Box Office Poisen" picks up soon after. This time, Linnet is in Hollywood to help her vampire boss arbitrate a deal between fueding Elven and human actors. It seems Elves have been getting more roles than humans because they can "glamour" the casting director (talk about a reverse casting couch!). The human actors want some kind of deal and Linnet and her boss are the ones to broker it. From there, plot twists (upon plot twists), murder, prejudice, mayhem and mystery take over. Linnet resolves all the overarching problems, but her personal concern--saving her lover John from Fae--is as grim as ever. I was overwhelmed by the authors good writing, plotting, exposition, character development--just all done in the very best manner. I don't want to give any more away--but this has a fresh, intriguing heroine and developing world view that intrigues and sucks you in. A guanteed one sitting read. (And, before cynicism rears it's ugly head, no, I wasn't given a draft or asked to write a review, and, no, I am not the author's friend/agent/neighbor, etc.). Read it, you won't be sorry.

Working for a vampire law firm doesn't get any easier. Linnet manages again to escape death at every turn, and do her job. Actors in Hollywood are complaining that Alfar actors have an unfair advantage in casting. They are right and Linnet finds that racism is rampant on both sides.
She and David have to navigate the arbitration. Linnet has to form a plan to get John back, even after an arranged meeting is designed to crush her hopes. Cannot wait for the next book in this series.
After Reading "This Case Will Kill Me," Bornikova's first book, I was delighted to find this sequel. Her main character is interesting, as is the setting, a current era variation on the trope of Vampires, Werewolves and Elves exist among us. The Powers here revealed themselves in the 1980s, and Linnet was fostered in a Vampire household. She is now a young lawyer, in a Vampire lead law firm. This book is about the stresses on actors and producers in Hollywood where Elves frequently get all the best parts. Are they using glamour to do so. Clever premise and well explored.
A good sequel to This Case is Going to Kill Me. Picks up where we left off.

I found that I was slightly less engaged in this story then the first one, but, that is often the case with second books.

Looking forward to the third one.
Like another reviewer mentioned, I’m surprised this series hasn’t received more reviews or attention. I haven’t written that many reviews before, but I felt compelled to do so for Box Office Poison because I’m enjoying this series so much. I read both books in the series when they first came out, and recently reread them again.

I love Urban Fantasy as much as the next UF fan, but I consider myself a little picky when it comes to the genre. After reading so much UF over the years, I find that a new series has to have something unique about it before I pick it up. I’m also not a big vampire or werewolf fan, but found Bornikova’s portrayal of these “powers” to be fresh and interesting. I also like Linnet a lot. She’s not your typical kick a$$ heroine wearing leather with an attitude. Boy, do I get tired of leather-wearing heroines on book covers. Instead, Linnet is a tweed-wearing lawyer trying to make her way in a power/male-dominated world. She doesn’t seek out trouble, but it seems to find her, and she’s emerged from several life-threatening incidents unscathed. There seems to be something special about Linnet that enables her to be so “lucky”, but Bornikova hasn’t revealed what that is just yet. That’s ok. While I hate waiting a year between books, I appreciate a series that reveals a little at a time. That’s what keeps me reading.

Speaking of gradual revelations, I wanted to address the romantic aspects of the series. I like for my UF books to have a romance somewhere in them. It doesn’t have to be at the forefront, but I like to know it’s going to happen sometime. I’ve noticed that a few reviewers mentioned there wasn’t much of a romance, or it was on hold. I have to disagree. While the first book in the series had Linnet spending time with John, an Alfar PI, he was unavailable for most of the time during Box Office Poison. If you’ve read the first book, you know what I’m talking about. I liked John, but he isn’t my choice for Linnet. I prefer David, the reserved vampire lawyer. There’s just something about a seemingly aloof guy that interests me. It makes it so much more satisfying when he falls for the girl. And while it might not be overly emphasized, if you read between the lines, you can tell David cares about Linnet way more than he should. All vampires and werewolves are male for some reason (I’m looking forward to finding out more about this), and they’re discouraged from getting too involved with human females since they can never be turned into vampires or werewolves. This makes David’s feelings for Linnet all the more interesting. David probably doesn’t want to admit it, but he cares a lot for Linnet. He even showed a little jealousy in this book. He’s still trying to fight his feelings, but they’re there. Linnet on the other hand, seems a little oblivious at the moment. I enjoyed seeing their relationship develop in this book. I don’t mind a slow burning romance, and I look forward to see how a romantic relationship between them can work out.

I can’t wait for the next book and plan on pre-ordering it as soon as it’s available!
Phillipa Bornikova is not getting the attention she deserves. I loves this series, and cannot wait until the next book in the series. There are several plot lines going on, but they do not overwhelm. Linnet Ellery is a fearless, compassionate, and curious young human lawyer in a world where "The Powers" (Vamps, Werewolves and Alfar" are the ruling class. They did not "come out" to the world until the 60's and bigotry is still rife in the world. In Hollywood this is especially true where the human actors are worried about being edged out of the movie business by the charismatic, beautiful Alfar. Linnet again, cracks the case and is realizing that there is something different about her, making her harder to kill than most. The romance is on hold here, but the action and laughs are not. You will not be disappointed!
